Emergency Alert as Sutlej Releases Rise
Emergency Alert as Sutlej Releases Rise: South Punjab is once again facing a dangerous flood situation after increased water releases into the Sutlej River and stagnant flows in the Chenab River. The Ministry of Water Resources has issued an emergency alert to all relevant departments, warning of the risk of severe flooding. According to official updates, the Indian High Commission has informed authorities about high-level floods at two points in the Sutlej River, including a very high-level flood at Ferozepur.
River Status: Sutlej and Chenab
The Sutlej River is under severe pressure after India released a large amount of water upstream. At Ganda Singh Wala, the water flow has risen to 230,000 cusecs, creating a situation of extremely high flood levels. At Sulemanki, the flow is 137,000 cusecs, while at Marala it has reached 62,000 cusecs.
The Chenab River, although not rising rapidly, remains stagnant at several points, which can still be dangerous if further rains or releases occur. At Khanki Headworks and Qadirabad, the flow is 98,000 cusecs each, while Head Trimon is recording 250,000 cusecs.
Situation in Multan Division
Multan Division is one of the most affected regions. At Sher Shah Dam, the Chenab’s flow is being carefully monitored. Authorities report that water levels are expected to recede within the next 24 hours. For now, the decision to breach the Sher Shah Dam has been postponed, and a technical committee will review the situation if conditions worsen.
In Jalalpur Pirwala Tehsil, the flood situation is critical. The temporary dam protecting the city is under pressure due to increased water flow, and several areas remain submerged. Rescue teams are working around the clock to evacuate residents there. Relief camps for flood victims have been set up within the city to provide shelter, food, and medical care.

Flood Waves at Head Muhammad Wala
A second major flood wave has passed through Head Muhammad Wala, one of the key monitoring points. Encouragingly, the gauge installed at Graywala Chowk has started showing a decline in water levels, suggesting that some areas downstream may see temporary relief.
PDMA Punjab and Weather Updates
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has assured the public that the intensity of monsoon rains has reduced. Director General Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that the 10th spell of monsoon rains has ended and there is no possibility of heavy rains in Punjab next week. What to Monitor Next
Officials are keeping a close eye on the Sher Shah Dam and other critical infrastructure. The decision to breach the Sher Shah Dam will depend on how quickly the water recedes in the Chenab. Residents living near embankments and headworks have been advised to remain vigilant as further releases from upstream cannot be ruled out.
