Relief Card for Flood Victims

The recent floods in Punjab have severely affected tens of thousands of families. The destruction of houses, loss of crops, and death of livestock have left the local population helpless. At such a time, the Punjab government has launched immediate relief measures for the affected people. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially announced the Relief Card for Flood Victims on Saturday, which aims to provide immediate and transparent financial assistance to the flood-affected people.

Relief Card program officially launched

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, while criticizing a major coalition partner, made it clear that the Punjab government will provide assistance to the flood victims in its own independent way. Launching the “Relief Card” program, she said that this card will be a source of direct financial assistance to the affected families, which will ensure transparency, speed, and fair distribution.

Financial assistance for farmers

Crops have also been severely affected by the floods. The government has also announced a relief package for farmers:

  • Farmers whose land is 12 acres or less will be given Rs. 20,000 per acre.

This measure aims to provide immediate financial assistance to small farmers so that they can resume farming.

Digital Flood Survey Campaign Launched

To make relief effective and transparent, Maryam Nawaz launched a digital flood survey campaign across Punjab. She also took the oath with the survey teams and inaugurated a digital portal for the survey.

2200 survey teams are in the field, comprising more than 10,000 people.

These teams include representatives from revenue, agriculture, livestock, district administration, and Pakistan Army.

The aim of this survey, conducted digitally, is to reach every affected family and provide assistance according to their real needs.

PPP’s stance and disagreement

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has always called the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) the most effective and fastest way to provide relief to flood victims. However, the PML-N government in Punjab has preferred the “Relief Card” and decided to work under the self-help system.

Comparison with other provinces and claims of PML-N’s performance

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz made an emotional statement:

“People from other provinces often say, ‘I wish we were in Punjab too.’”

She added that there is no magic wand, but fortunately, Punjab has mostly had PML-N governments, which have always prioritized the welfare of the people.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s instructions and review meeting

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also directed to provide immediate assistance to the flood victims and increase the pace of rehabilitation. After addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he chaired a high-level meeting attended by the chief secretaries of all provinces.

The Prime Minister directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to immediately complete the repair work of the M-5 motorway affected by the flood of the Sutlej River.
