Sindh Transport Department Digitalizes Route Permits – Complete Guide for Commercial Vehicles

Sindh Transport Department Digitalizes Route Permits

Sindh Transport Department Digitalizes Route Permits: In a major step towards digital transformation, the Sindh Transport Department has officially launched an online portal for the issuance and registration of route permits for commercial vehicles. With this new initiative, the manual process has been completely abolished, making the entire system digital, efficient, and transparent.

This development is part of the broader project titled “Automation of PTAs, RTAs, and MVIs”, aimed at modernizing the province’s transport infrastructure.

Digital Shift: Route Permit System Goes Online

Provincial Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that all processes related to route permits, including issuance and certification, will now be handled online. This change marks the end of traditional paper-based systems that were time-consuming and prone to corruption.

By going digital, the department aims to simplify procedures for commercial transporters and ensure that all operations are transparent and accountable.

Background: Automation of Transport Services in Sindh

The automation project began in 2024 with a focus on bringing technological reforms to the transport sector. The Sindh government recognized the need to eliminate inefficiencies and launched a multi-phase plan to digitalize key services.

In March 2025, the first phase of the project went live, introducing an online portal for:

  • Vehicle registration
  • Physical inspection
  • Issuance of fitness certificates

This was a major milestone in the journey toward a fully digital transport system in Sindh.

New Fitness Centers in Karachi

As part of the digital transformation, the Transport Department also opened two new vehicle fitness centers in Karachi to support the growing demand:

  1. Zulfiqarabad Oil Tankers Terminal (Malir)
  2. Ibrahim Hyderi (Korangi)

These centers provide physical inspections and issue digital fitness certificates to commercial vehicles.

In just four months, over 35,000 vehicles received fitness certificates through this system. Additionally, data of unfit vehicles is now being shared in real-time with the Traffic Police and Motorway Police to improve road safety.

Upcoming Expansion Plans

Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the department plans to open more fitness centers not just in Karachi, but across other divisional headquarters of Sindh. This will ensure that commercial vehicle owners throughout the province have access to digital services close to home.

Key Features of the Online Route Permit Sindh System

The new online route permits the Sindh system to offer several useful features that simplify life for transporters:

  • Apply Online: Transporters can now apply for a new route permit or renew an existing one from the comfort of their home or office.
  • No Physical Visits Required: There’s no need to stand in long queues or visit government offices.
  • SMS Alerts: Vehicle owners will receive SMS notifications 15 days before permit expiry, reminding them to renew on time.
  • Cancellation of Unused Permits: Permits that are not used or renewed on time will be automatically canceled, improving accountability.
  • Increased Departmental Revenue: The digital system is expected to reduce fraud and increase the Transport Department’s income.
