Wheat Prices in Punjab Surge to Record Highs Amid Floods and Corruption Allegations
The ongoing rise in wheat prices has become a serious concern for both consumers and flour mill owners as Wheat Prices in Punjab Surge to Record Highs. Recent floods combined with alleged government mismanagement have pushed the price of flour to unprecedented levels, making daily life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens.
Flour Prices Reach Unprecedented Levels
Over the past few weeks, the price of a 10-kilogram bag of flour has increased by Rs 300, reaching Rs 1,000 per bag. Similarly, the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has climbed to Rs 2,000, according to the Flour Mills Association.
Asim Raza, a key leader of the association, stated that the rise in wheat and flour prices is directly impacting households across Punjab. With inflation already high, this new increase in food prices is adding more pressure on the public.

Government Restrictions and Alleged Corruption
The situation has worsened after the Punjab government banned the transportation of wheat to other provinces. According to Asim Raza, this ban has created an environment where corruption is thriving.
He claimed that trucks carrying wheat are only allowed to leave Punjab after paying a bribe of at least Rs 50,000. These illegal practices are reportedly turning the wheat supply chain into a profit-making scheme for a select group of individuals.
Raza further alleged that this entire setup is being planned to benefit a particular company—the same one involved in the previous wheat scandal. He warned that in the coming days, there might be calls to import wheat, creating opportunities for private players to profit once again.

Wheat Price Hike Across Punjab
Due to these issues, wheat prices in Punjab have skyrocketed in various districts. According to market sources:
- In Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, and Layyah, wheat prices have hit Rs 3,450 per maund.
- In other parts of Southern Punjab, prices range between Rs 3,300 to Rs 3,400 per maund.
- In Central Punjab, the average price of wheat is around Rs 3,300 per maund.
These prices are significantly higher than previous months, raising alarm among farmers, mill owners, and consumers alike.
Floods Threaten Wheat Supply and Storage
Adding to the crisis, recent floods have caused severe damage in many areas of Punjab. There is now growing fear that the government’s wheat warehouses could be affected, leading to further shortages in the market.
If the floodwaters damage existing wheat stocks, the province may face an even bigger crisis, potentially forcing the government to import wheat from abroad, a costly and time-consuming process.

Industry Leaders Call for Government Action
Asim Raza and the Flour Mills Association are urging the Chief Minister of Punjab to take immediate notice of the situation. They are demanding:
- A review of the wheat transport ban.
- A crackdown on bribery and corruption.
- Protection of existing wheat stocks from flood damage.
- Transparent and fair distribution of wheat to flour mills.
Raza emphasized that if these steps are not taken quickly. The wheat and flour crisis will only deepen in the coming weeks.
